Hace ya 80 años que Bob Kane y Bill Finger crearon a Batman (en su primera aparición, Detective Comics #27; May, 1939), con el dio origen al manto del murciélago, así llamado el atuendo que viste este héroe para luchar contra el mal en Ciudad Gótica; ésta dupla dotó a este personaje de una personalidad única y propia, que se dualiza entre Batman y Bruce Wayne; algo que seguramente no imaginaron, fue que el manto lo vestiría mas de una persona y que a pesar de ello, la personalidad del héroe, aun con ciertos cambios, se mantendría tan fuerte como en un principio.
A lo largo de la existencia del hombre murciélago, muchos han usado el manto, por una o por otra razón, por mas o por menos tiempo, tanto en los comics como en otros medios de comunicación, para el bien o para el mal, dentro de la continuidad de DC Comics y fuera de ella, e incluso, con el consentimiento de Bruce Wayne y sin el... lo que es mas, el manto en algunas ocasiones se ha transformado adaptándose a cada uno de los portadores, de los cuales, entre los mas destacados podemos mencionar varios de ellos, sin ningún orden cronológico o de importancia, algunos de ellos se ha señalado el año en que portaron por primera vez el manto, otros, fuera de la continuidad de DC u otros medios y son los siguientes:
